Kid, Alias Silver Tongue
By Cattle Annie
Author's Note: I always wondered why it was Heyes that went in the front door and Kid got to come in the side. It’s short but it answered the question for me, hope it does for you as well.
"We could talk to Lom, Lom Trevors. You remember he was in the gang, way back, didn't stay very long after" a pause here, finger placed on chin as eyebrows knit in concentration. "after the Bixby job. Boys got a little rowdy in the get away, he came close to getting caught while trying to get that kid, Sorenson, back on his horse. Scared him pretty good. I think he liked helping that kid out and that's why he went in to sheriffing." Heyes swirled the little bit of coffee in his cup.
"I guess. Certainly can't stroll up to the governor's mansion and ask him direct." Kid peered at the coffee in his cup wondering what lie within it's murky depths - one never knew with Heyes' coffee.
"That's true. I think you should ride in..."
A brown hat quickly lifted, "Now wait a minute Heyes, why me?". Kid pointed a finger at his own chest.
"Well Lom likes you better is all." Heyes shrugged. Kid knew that look, it was the same one Heyes would use on the gang while trying to get them to buy in to a job that didn't seem real appealing.
"No, I ain't gonna just stroll in to a sheriff's office by myself." Kid shook his head.
"So you want me to?" Two brown eyes widened.
"Well no, but" Kid looked at his partner "we should go together."
"So you go in..."
"I go in." the Kid's voice rose, "Again, why's it gotta be me? Why aren't..."
"Look Kid, when he was in the gang he seemed to like you better. I think it's got something to do with all that gun twirling you do." Hands held up to stop the next outburst. "Besides he'll see me and just draw on me, won't even ask any questions. He knows he can't outdraw you so he'll give you a chance to speak."
"But wouldn't this be the perfect opportunity for you to use that quick-mind and silver-tongue?" A small smile played on his lips. "I wouldn't want to deny you the chance to delve in to your vast and varied vocabulary which you could use to successfully ply the unwitting and hapless sheriff into seeing the justness of our plea for amnesty."
A set of brown eyes slid sideways, an eyebrow raised just slightly, a short pause (wait for it....) "Well Kid, you've got a point there. I am a little better at convincing people to seeing our side of things." A finger slid up and pushed his black hat a little further back on his head.
"Okay, so I'll go in..."
Kid just smiled to himself, now who was the one with the silver-tongue?

Oh I like this..knew Kid was the smart one
Another great story. It did answer the question very well.
Could hear the voices with each word. Thank you!
Awwwww - NICE! Clever, clever Kid. And I loved the 'wait for it...' pause.
I like it! I was sort of hoping to see a variation where Kid "did" go in the front door, but...this was great. I love the explaination of why Heyes went in the front.
